FAQs

What kind of grease does Moline recommend using?

The type of grease depends on the type of the application.  Moline Bearing uses an NLGI Grade 2 grease as our standard offering.  However, this can be altered based on the design requirements of the bearing.  Some other grease Moline Bearing offers is high temperature, food grade, and hard lubrication.

Does it matter if I mount my pillow block housing upside down?

The answer to this question is a bit more complicated than a simple yes or no.  While the mounting of the pillow block housing does not directly affect the bearing’s performance, the orientation of the load does.  See the figure below for orientation of load and rating of bearing.

reduced safe bearing loads

Can I get my housing painted with a different coating system and/or color?

Yes. Every bearing can be painted using a custom coating and/or color. This can either be specified by the Customer or determined based on the bearing application (e.g. food grade, highly corrosive, etc.). As with all Custom work, there will be an additional charge and lead time to complete this, but with our streamlined process, we will get your order completed when you need it.

What does Expansion and Non-Expansion mean?

This refers to the bearing’s ability to move axially to accommodate thermal expansion of the shaft, up to 0.100”. As material heats up, it starts to expand, which is a linear growth based on overall length, difference in beginning and ending temperatures and a coefficient of thermal expansion (constant based on material). As the names imply, Expansion allows for the axial movement and Non-Expansion does not. The Non-Expansion unit is typically installed on the drive side of the shaft and the expansion on the driven side of the shaft. Regardless of how much thermal expansion is expected, Moline Bearing recommends installing one Expansion and one Non-Expansion bearing on a two bearing shaft.

Can I convert an Expansion to Non-Expansion unit or vice versa?

Yes and no. Converting from Non-Expansion to Expansion is much easier than the other way around, but it is highly likely the seal will be damaged during this process. At a bare minimum, it is recommended the Customer purchase a new set of seals if the conversion is to be completed in the field. Converting from Expansion to Non-Expansion is much more difficult as this requires additional internal components and knowledge of how these are installed (in addition to new seals). If you find yourself needing to convert one to the other, it is much easier to swap out the entire unit than make the field modification.

What does a Tapered Roller bearing mean? Is the inside of the sleeve tapered?

Tapered describes the race the roller rides on and this geometry is internal to the bearing. The inside of the sleeve (portion that slides over the shaft) is a constant diameter along the entire length of the unit and does NOT taper.

What kind of thrust loads can your ball bearings take?

This is a loaded question, literally. If a thrust load is the primary load, it is never advised to use a ball bearing for that application. However, ball bearings can handle some thrust load if they are a secondary load. Moline Bearing recommends not exceeding 25% of the dynamic radial load or the difference of the dynamic radial load and applied radial load, whichever is less. For example, if the dynamic radial load is 1,000 lbs. and the applied radial load is 850 lbs., the thrust load shall not exceed 150 lbs., which is the lesser of 25% (250 lbs.) or the difference of the dynamic radial load and applied radial load (1000 - 850 = 150 lbs.).

What information do I need to provide if I'm unsure what bearing is best for my application?

While an all-encompassing answer to this question could be quite lengthy, Moline Bearing recommends having the following information as a minimum: Shaft Diameter, Operating RPM and Temperature, Mounting / Housing Type, Radial and/or Thrust Loads, Type of Application and Special Considerations (e.g. Food Grade, low maintenance, paint color/system, etc.).

Does Moline Bearing recommend auto-greasers?

Lubrication is the life-blood of the bearing.  Too much or too little can directly impact the performance and integrity of the bearing.  Moline Bearing does not have an opinion on this matter as Customer specific operating requirements drive this decision.  What is of importance is that the bearing gets the proper lubrication, whether it be manual or automatic, which can only be determined by periodic monitoring and maintenance of the bearing.
